Picpoul de Pinet Chemin des Dames
Contents
Sweetness: Dry
Grape: Piquepoul Blanc
Grape info: Since the creation of the Picpoul de Pinet AOC in 2013, its popularity has soared in the UK. A native of southern France, Picpoul has been cultivated there for centuries but only recently have its luminous citrus fruits and nervy acidity been in such demand. Lemon-scented and occasionally on the floral side, it makes a famously good accompaniment to seafood. Rare examples aged in Acacia wood and old vine versions labelled Patience de Picpoul are slowly emerging to challenge its reputation as ‘straightforward’ wine.
About: AOC Picpoul de Pinet covers some 1400 hectares around the Thau lagoon, close to the Mediterranean Sea. The maritime influence mediates high summer temperatures, protecting the vines from excessive heat. Piquepoul is perfectly adapted to the sandy, limestone soils of the region. Grapes for the Chemin des Dames are harvested at night to retain freshness and aromatics. Fermentation is followed by five months ageing period on the lees.
Tasting note: Crystal-clear lemon in colour, with hints of green. Delicate aromas of citrus on the nose as well as notes of acacia and flint. The palate is well balanced, textured, with a zesty acidity. A pure long, lush and mouth-watering finish.
Character: Green apples, citrus, saline
