Grape info: Italy’s greatest, native red grape, making two of their most famous wines: Barolo and Barbaresco. Like Pinot Noir, it has an almost mythical ability to communicate the fine nuances of terroir. Light in colour, very high in tannin, capable of producing some of the greatest wines in the world.
About: Now third-generation winemakers, the Lanzavecchia family have been making wine in the Seralunga d’Alba for over fifty years. A few kilometres away in Gavi, the Cortese grape reaches the summit of its potential in the commune’s eponymous wines.
Grapes are harvested by hand and are then destemmed and crushed gently. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a maximum temperature of 28°C. The time on the skins varies from 25 to 28 days to extract the maximum quantities of polyphenols and structure. Racking off takes place at the end of the alcoholic fermentation and the temperature of the new wine is made use of for the spontaneous onset of the malolactic fermentation.
